Long-Term Cardiovascular Complications of COVID: Seeing the Forest for the Trees

This program will be held on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, from 3-4 pm Central Time.

Live Broadcast Time Zones

4:00 PM EDT |2:00 PM MDT | 1:00 PM PDT

Much has been made of the role of on-going myocarditis and the impact of this has probably been over-emphasized but there remains much to be learned about the long-term CV complications of acute Covid infection including management, screening prior to competitive sports, and the role of the CV system in the clinical picture of “long Covid.“

Discuss the pathophysiology of acute Covid -19 cardiac injury and the spectrum of late cardiovascular sequelae. A key part of the discussion will be on the extent of resolution of acute cardiac injury and their impact upon late CV symptomatology. I will also discuss the issue of “collateral damage” resulting in delays in the management of acute coronary syndromes occurring during the acute phase of Covid infection and the potential impact of this on late cardiac outcomes.

  • Discuss the complex pathophysiology of acute COVID 19 infection and the cardiovascular system.
  • Review the natural history and long-term effects of patients with evidence of cardiac injury during acute COVID.
  • Review the controversy over the role of myocarditis as a cause for long-term symptoms.
  • Emphasize what is still unknown in regard to long-haul COVID and the CV system.
  • Provide a framework for future research into the known and unknowns regarding late CV disease in COVID survivors.

Target Audience
It is a topic of interest to cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, oncologists, general internists, radiologists, and all groups of providers including trainees, NP/PA’s, and physicians.
