Overview

This tutorial provides a perspective on the new guidelines for assessing risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) events in adults without known disease, highlighting what is new, what is controversial and potential future directions. Implications of coronary artery calcium scanning  and carotid ultrasound to assess for subclinical disease burden will be discussed. In addition to the adjunct measures for ASCVD risk estimation, discussion will include the use of aortic pulse wave velocity and circulating levels of lipoprotein (a).
