Overview

This tutorial will review the basic history of heart transplantation in children and adolescents, with emphasis on the specific surgical techniques of heart transplantation. Next, discussion will focus on the role of echocardiography in heart transplantation, from the assessment of potential donor hearts, examination of the newly transplanted heart in the operating room, and assessment of patients as outpatients after transplant. Key pearls for surveillance and detection of early rejection will be demonstrated. Lastly, we will discuss new technologies on the horizon in pediatric heart failure and heart transplantation.
