Overview

Abnormal diastolic filling of the heart plays a major role in producing the signs and symptoms of heart failure. It is essential to understand the underlying pathophysiology of diastolic function, including its progression from normal to relaxation to compliance abnormalities. Doppler echocardiography can be used to evaluate normal and abnormal diastolic filling of the heart.  This information can then be applied to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with diastolic dysfunction, particularly those with “heart failure and preserved ejection fraction”.
