This tutorial addresses issues that are commonly encountered when patients receive implantable cardiac devices. Pacemakers, defibrillators, and left ventricular assist devices, can improve survival and quality of life; but each alters a person’s end-of-life experience. This session also discusses clinical and ethical issues related to such dilemmas.
- Describe the permissibility of withholding and withdrawing life-sustaining treatments (W/W LST)
- Differentiate W/W LST from physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia
- Describe the results of research related to the ethical aspects of withholding device therapy and deactivating implanted cardiac devices
