This tutorial addresses issues regarding difficult discussion and managing expectations. The presenters use case-based scenarios and role playing to address anger, difficult prognostic discussions, requests for “everything” to be done, and challenging surrogate decision making scenarios. This session builds upon the framework from previous communication tutorials.

Objectives

  • Construct a framework for eliciting patient’s goals of care
  • Apply concepts of Ask-Tell-Ask regarding patient understanding of medical situation
  • Recognize misalignment of a patient's expectations regarding health care options and recommended medical plan of care
  • Identify duties of a surrogate decision-maker
