This tutorial will discuss approaches to advanced care planning. The presenter will discuss differences between advance directives and living wills and will introduce concepts regarding state-to-state variation, advance care planning and will begin to discuss tips for discussing this with patients which will be discussed in greater detail in further talks.  

Objectives

  • Distinguish between clinical features and a “do not resuscitate/do not intubate” status versus a “full code” status
  • Describe differences between living wills, durable healthcare power of attorneys, and physician orders for life sustaining treatment (POLST) and when each may be appropriate
  • Summarize key differences between code status discussion and goals of care discussion
