In this tutorial, the presenter will discuss what comprehensive palliative care looks like in the 21st century. This includes strategies for assessing goals of care and quality of life as well as demystifying differences between palliative care and hospice. This session will set up more detailed discussions in subsequent sessions.  

Objectives

  • Define comprehensive palliative care and how it differs from hospice
  • Identify the emerging models for end-of-life care, and to view this with uncertain prognosis like circulatory failure, what the palliative care approach might look like
  • Describe the role of palliative care and symptom management and explore treatment strategies for patients with advanced cardiac disease
