Venous thromboembolic disease is comprised of deep venous thrombus and pulmonary embolism. Although catheter angiography remains the gold standard for diagnosis of these conditions, in recent years other imaging modalities such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have become increasingly important. This lecture will provide the learner with a review of these imaging modalities, including a description of their strengths and weaknesses and a discussion of practice implications.


  • Summarize strengths & weaknesses of ultrasound, CT and MRI in the diagnosis of venous thromboembolic disease
  • Describe a potential role for each of these modalities in the diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
