This tutorial presents key concepts important in the management of high blood pressure (HBP). The linear relationship between blood pressure and cardiovascular risk will be outlined and discussed. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring will be reviewed as a tactical component to the accurate diagnosis; new directions in goal setting and value of preventive measures at the individual and population level will be examined.

Objectives

  • Identify  pre-hypertension values as responsible for half of HBP burden
  • Describe the clinical scenarios ambulatory blood pressure monitoring outperforms clinic BP measurement
  • Review current strategies in the selection of antihypertensive agents and new evidence regarding more strict BP goals
