Overview

slide

Participants will better understand the anatomy of the atrial septum, how atrial septal defects develop, and how they can be best characterized echocardiographically. Therefore knowledge of atrial septal embryologic development is of crucial importance and can help clarify our understanding of the mechanisms of maldevelopment.

Objectives

  • Identify the various types and locations of atrial communications
  • Recognize the proposed embryologic developmental abnormalities associated with atrial septal defects
  • Utilize echocardiography to define various atrial communications
  • Describe those defects which represent true atrial septal defects
